The Cook Islands have created one of the world\'s largest marine reserves, protecting 22 times more vast waters in the Pacific than Ireland.
Legislative setup 1. 9 million-
Late yesterday night, the square kilometer reserve passed through the Parliament of the small country.
Kevin Iro, an environmental activist who first raised the idea more than five years ago, said it was a landmark achievement that would help protect the ocean for future generations.
\"This is a historic moment, especially because everyone supports it, including our traditional leaders,\" he told AFP . \".
The Cook Islands have a population of only 10,000, and the total land area of the 15 islands is about 236 square kilometers, equivalent to Dublin.
But its isolated position in the Pacific Ocean, with no immediate neighbors between New Zealand and Hawaii, means that it has a huge sea territory.
The Cook Islands have a close relationship with the ocean and think the ocean is sacred, but over-fishing and pollution have damaged the marine environment, including coral reefs that once surrounded all the islands, Iro said.
The Marine Sanctuary, known as Marae Moana, will give the environment a healing opportunity for islanders to protect their heritage, he said.
When I moved back here
From New Zealand
\"About 16 years ago I saw what was going on in the lagoons and coral reefs and I really wanted to protect them for my children,\" he said . \".
\"I hope they have the same experience as I did when I was a child.
\"The idea is not to ban commercial fishing or mineral exploration altogether, but to ensure that it is carried out in a sustainable way.
However, there will be a core
A fishing area with a total area of about 320,000 square kilometers, 50 nautical miles from the coastline of each island.
Prime Minister Henry Puna said Marae Moana provided a blueprint for managing the global marine environment.
\"Together we have a vision to turn our small country into the cleanest and greenest tourist destination in the world,\" Cook Islands News quoted him as telling Parliament . \".
\"Not only do we recognize that the ocean has brought us income in terms of fisheries, tourism and potential seabed minerals ---
It also provides us with clean air, clean water and clean food to nourish and sustain us.
