Stripping Away the Darkness as Murals Are Reborn - quiet electric toothbrush

Perfect Art Deco interior with thousands of people seen every day.
Most of them pass.
But in the past nine months, a team of six administrators has almost moved in and will be there for the next two years.
They carefully hid behind the giant graffiti and methodically removed decades of yellowed varnish from the building's famous murals, 1 inch at a time, hour after hour.

So unobtrusive, no one seems to notice them.
"I sneezed a few days ago and almost scared people to death," said Gillian Randall, chief nursery of EverGreene Architectural Art, a Manhattan restoration mural company. (
EverGreene has worked in other landmark buildings such as the nearby Radio City concert hall. )
When the murals in the north corridor of Rockefeller Hall 30 were finally cleaned up, Jeffrey Greene, president of Evergreen, had a eureka moment.
"I realized the building was out of balance," he said, standing on the second morning.
On the balcony of the floor, staring directly at "The Abolition of War", a mural by Spanish painter Jose Maria seset depicts a woman riding two cannons with open arms holding a baby.

, "Marble should have the same tone as the background color of the walls and murals," Mr. Greene said.
Advertising during the building, painter, designer and mural Edward Trump coordinated the color scheme for all the artwork and finishes in each building lobby in the complex.
But the surface has become darker over the years.
As the varnish finish of murs deepens, maintenance personnel apply a deeper color to the undecorated part of the wall to match.

Then he realized that the easiest way is still the best: gently rub all surfaces with an agate shredder or bone clip, a more commonly used binding tool.
By working slowly, the varnish starts to fall off easily in tiny parts.

Still, there are some minor losses or flaws.
Green called them and the previous admins scrubbed so badly that they destroyed some of the design.
He and his team had to paint in these areas.
They still face two of the biggest challenges: "Time" on the ceiling of the hall, "American progress" on the information desk ".
