SALEM --
Jeff and Jennifer buzz
Snell doesn't know what's in the dust of their vacuum cleaner.
Six months after the Salem couple volunteered to allow dust in vacuum bags to receive a national study of domestic contaminants, they began to understand the dangers of buying common household appliances and furniture. The Barz-
Snells and 69 other families from 7 states participated in the $150,000 study conducted by the Buffalo cleaner production action organization
Non-profit organizations.
Six chemicals were found in each dust sample-
Substances proven to be harmful to the animal reproductive system, Beverly Thorpe says he is one of the partners of the studyauthors.
The authors say that while the report records the polymethyl bromide found in breast milk, one of the biggest hazards of the chemicals tested came from the neighboring benzene ester.
According to the report, exposure to benzene Ester and its metabolites is associated with asthma, premature breast development in girls and deterioration of male semen quality.
These six chemicals include phthal salts found in PVC (PVC) products such as cosmetics, shower curtains, toys, flooring and furniture;
Perf organic for the manufacture of Teflon and GoreTex;
Polybromo de-benzene ether or bromide flame retardant applied to textiles and plastics, foam and electronic equipment;
Organic compounds such as PVC water pipes and packaging materials, polyurethane foam and glass coating;
In textiles, laundry detergent and all-
Purpose Cleaner;
And pesticides, which are used to kill insects, and sometimes carpets. The Barz-
Snell's home is at the end of a tree
A crowded street near Forest River Park is filled with items that young families usually buy; flame-
Flame retardant sofas, mattresses, curtains, computers and plastic toys are provided for their three children.
With this report, the family now wants to know how toxic their house is.
"I think I will be more careful about my purchase," Jeff Bartz said . "
Snell, the pastor of Salem's first church.
After reading the report, the couple decided to replace several items.
Jeff took his gore.
Tex jacket, replacing Teflon pan with ironcured skillet.
Their daughter's plastic three
The wheeled bicycle made of PVC is no longer in the house, it contains neighboring benzene ester.
The couple are also knocking out their tiles.
Clean chemicals containing hydrocarbon phenol.
It is reported that these hormones, similar to natural estrogen, will lead to changes in the sexual development of some organisms.
"Instead of using the latest and greatest tile cleaner with a variety of bacteria --
"I think we will clean the property with soap and water, or a little water and bleach," Barz said . "Snell. Jennifer Barz-
Snell is already considering bigger purchases, as well as potential chemicals
Items she must carry with her for the time being.
She sighed, pointing to the brown curtains and the flower sofa in the living room.
The curtains and sofas are filled with flame retardant.
"This is a clear case of toxic intrusion, and the invisible contaminants have entered our home without our consent or knowledge," said Cindy Lupi of health tomorrow Alliance, which was released locally.
Joel tikner, professor of environmental health at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, said the federal government needs to make a comprehensive revision of the Toxic Substances Control Act, which is enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Tickner said the bill does not require companies to list the ingredients in products tested in the report that contain chemicals.
"To a large extent, the public is flying blindly," he said . "
"Consumers should not worry about this.
This is something the government should be involved in.
Tickner and the authors of the report suggested that the public begin to use safer alternatives to the chemicals analyzed.
Simple changes can include the use of nylon instead of vinyl shower curtains, says Tickner;
Wood floor is not covered with vinyl;
And eliminate the use of PVC at home.
Lupi's health tomorrow coalition calls on Governor Mitt Romney to issue an executive order to remove chemicals from pesticides, children's products and personal care products.
The group also urged Romney to call for safer alternatives to toxic chemicals used by industrial and national institutions.
Donna Rhein, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, said her office would review the report.
"We support efforts to reduce exposure to environmental pollutants and we look forward to reading this report," said Rhine.
