Anyone who tells you that Hamilton can spend billions of dollars on any "we" want to gamble with Hamilton's future for light rail, with no alternative plan, it will take more than a billion dollars for lost opportunities.
In fact, there's no billion dollars in B-sitting there. Line LRT.
Instead, it is a solid business plan supported by more than 30 years of funding, paid by rider fares, plus it will be in 14-
Kilometer corridor
If our LRT plan disappears, the business case of investing in Hamilton will also disappear.
Then, we go back to the drawings and fight for the equally diminishing scraps that all other communities in Ontario aspire.
If a new committee decides to flush out the toilet the $0. 105 billion we have already spent on LRT, we don't have a backup plan.
It took us 10 years to plan for the light rail;
16 narrow politicians, all eager for their pie, how long does it take to reach an agreement on how to spend $1 billion?
As our province is on an unsustainable path, the Ford government is rightly very focused on reducing the Ontario deficit.
But it also means that each expenditure must be carefully reviewed.
If investment does not generate income, no government concerned with a balanced budget will provide us with more roads or infrastructure than we already have access.
It is important to remember what is dangerous.
As I wrote before, the cost of doing nothing is far more than $1 billion.
Here's what we're going to lose: invest $1 billion to upgrade infrastructure for older people under 14
Kilometer corridors including all groundwater, power and sewer facilities, new bridges, sidewalks and stations (
In fact, trains and tracks are actually just a fraction of the overall spending);
Spending $60 million over 10 years on planning and engineering;
The $45 million property seized by the province will be sold at a discount because the commitment of LRT to provide these property has disappeared;
The project will create 0. 45 billion construction jobs with a direct economic impact of $3,500;
In terms of strengthening development and economic growth, if not billions, hundreds of millions of people, as well as the taxes that are permanently generated by these growth;
City strategic plan and mission declaration that are not worth printing on paper;
Our reputation in the private sector companies we need to invest in Hamilton;
What dignity do we have left (
This will be more disruptive than the stadium legend that made us the laughing stock);
Our relationship with the superior government (
Who will give us money to do something "big? );
Years of progress in reshaping our image and restoring our confidence;
The enthusiasm of thousands of people recently attracted by Hamilton: This ambitious city.
Businesses, labor, transit, environmental and poverty groups in Hamilton were once again asked to show support for the light rail.
Hospitals, educational institutions, educational boards and anchor agencies where we employ and serve thousands of Hamilton people have identified LRT as important for their operations.
Developers and our top companies say LRT is encouraging them to invest further in Hamilton.
Hundreds of companies, large and small, have added support for the project.
This is a series of impressive community groups and leaders who understand the value of birds in their hands.
The plan is nearing completion and the political game needs to be over.
Now is the time to build this transformative project.
