Officials at the Idaho Mountain House Air Force Base have canceled a new public breastfeeding policy that has been slammed by service personnel, military spouses and breastfeeding supporters.
"I understand better the public's concerns about breastfeeding and am sorry for the personal offense," said the colonel.
David Iverson, commander of the mountain 366 Fighter Wing, said in a statement.
"This policy is not intended to exclude anyone, and I regret that it has produced this effect.
When we look for better ways to accommodate and respect all individuals in our community, I will withdraw this policy.
The basic directive signed by Iverson issued the abolished public breastfeeding policy in April 16.
"In order to take care of the rights of family care mothers in mountainous areas, please ensure that anyone breastfeeding children in the waiting area for customer service is provided with a private office or room to meet the care needs. . . .
"Mothers should use care covers if they do not want to use private rooms," the policy said . ".
"Mothers who refuse to use care covers and who refuse to care in private rooms provided by office staff may be asked to leave the area.
"It is not clear that if there are any incidents that have triggered new rules, although some of the service staff and spouses of the mountain home speculate that this is due to complaints.

Should there be rules?
Breastfeeding mothers on federal property are usually protected by federal law, which provides that breastfeeding is permitted as long as the mother and baby are authorized anywhere.
