Mike Smyth: Math on dirty deeds supports public inquiry into B.C. money-laundering - best electric toothbrush on the market
Opinion: After last week's money-
Is it time to open the investigation?
The government of John Hogan is expected to make a decision this week as the demand is increased
Deep investigation with teeth
When you're trying to absorb the idea that $5 billion of dirty money is being cleaned up in the real estate market, keep this key background in mind: it's just within a year --
A year of money
The public has begun to pay attention to money laundering.
"What you're talking about is 2018, which is a year when the market is starting to slow down," said Brad West, mayor of noble harbor . ".
"It was a year of money --
Money laundering is a topof-
Many public discussions and media attention and actions taken by the government have attracted attention.
Still, more than $5 billion in the real estate market has been cleared.
"This leads to an obvious question: what will happen in other years when Vancouver Metro house prices rise?
"Can you imagine that in 2014, when there was an astronomical rise in your house prices, the amount of dirty money cleaned through the real estate market was 2015, 2016 and 2017? ” West asks.
"This is not normal.
Now we are aware that organized crime plays an important role in promoting crime.
Last week's blockbuster provincial crime report
2018 money laundering in the real estate market is very attractive
Millionaires in the real estate market were bought out.
Now, it raises another obvious question: what should be done about this?
A young first for the West
During the term of Mayor who carried out a task, the answer was an open investigation.
"It has devastating consequences for people," he said . "
"When drug dealers make billions of dollars, we 've had thousands of people die from the drug.
In our real estate market, their hard-earned money is washed and priced for people in their own communities.
"It's all connected.
This is systemic corruption and systemic failure.
You need an open investigation to determine how it happened, why it happened, and how to prevent it from happening again.

Former assistant Simon trenbly-
Chief representative of the Charbonneau Committee;
Brad West, mayor of noble harbor
Former prosecutor and media commentator Sandy Garossino called on the public to investigate organized crime, money at a press conference
The crisis of money laundering, opioid and affordability in February 2019.
Nick procaylo/PNG file supporter of the public inquiry points to the Charbonneau Commission in Quebec, which called for an investigation into corruption in the government on 2011 --
Bid construction contract.
The investigation, which cost about $40 million, led to dozens of arrests and the recovery of $95 million in improper public funds.
Simon Tribley, assistant chief representative of the Charbonneau committee, said the province of bc should not hesitate to conduct a similar investigation here.
"This is the best investment you can make," he said . " He believes the Quebec investigation has changed the culture of corruption in the province.
"20 years ago, if you made a municipal political contribution here, you would expect to get a public contract in return.
It's totally unethical, but it's normal.
Now we have safeguards to prevent this from happening.
We changed our society.
"We have changed the public perception of corruption and collusion in public contracts.
"But isn't the job of police and prosecutors to catch the bad guys and put them in jail?
"This is an organized crime," Tremblay said . "
"If you arrest someone, the other person will take his place and continue.
Unless you have a commission of inquiry to find out what's going on and how to stop it, it's hard to solve the problem.
"Prime Minister John Hogan's cabinet will consider this week whether to conduct a public inquiry here.
Tremblay gave him some advice.
"If you appoint a commissioner with a political connection, or you say the investigation will only hear testimony on a voluntary basis, the public will think it is a joke," he said . ".
"You need someone who is independent.
You need a Commissioner who enjoys a good reputation and credibility in the public.
You need the power of a subpoena to force people to testify and provide documents.
In other words, you need a public inquiry that is truly in power.
You don't need a former politician to manage it.
You need someone who has the courage to open the door like a judge.
In Quebec, they have former French judges and prosecutors who fearlessly put Morris (Mom)
Boucher, head of the Montreal Hell Angels team, is in prison.
"She's tough and firm," Tremblay said . " She added that part of the Commission's mandate is to work closely with the police and prosecutors.
"We work together. in-Their hands-
This is our task.
"As for the price tag of the investigation, the police and prosecutors have recovered more than twice the amount of wasted public funds in Quebec.
Tremblay believes that it is possible to get a similar return in BC.
"You have paid a lot now," he said . ".
"The loss of government taxes, the brutal social costs of drugs, crime and affordable housing.
"Just do math.
You have more than $5 billion.
Wash black money in a year
If you can reduce this number by ten, you are already ahead.
So I did math.
Ten per cent of $5 billion is $0. 5 billion.
Hell, not even 50 million dollars.
So isn't the investigation worth paying?
"The public wants it," said Vancouver city MP Christine Boyle . ".
"The reports we have seen so far are impressive.
But I would like to know what else we can find out through the investigation.
I think she will fulfill her wish.
Hogan said his cabinet will consider an open investigation on Wednesday.
None of the governments wanted to raise expectations but failed to achieve them.
Public inquiry seems to be coming soon.
