Answer to the cry and Peter Maritz.
By Wednesday afternoon, hundreds of boxes of food, clothes, blankets and water were shipped from the city to Knysna.
The Knysna fire claimed the lives of seven people, including a fireman and four people. year-
More than 10 000 people were displaced and their homes destroyed.
Knysna officials said this week that they urgently needed sleeping bags, mattresses, blankets, small household appliances and toiletries.
Two friends from Midland were very shocked by the damage suffered in the area, and they decided to bring together everyone they knew to help those affected.
Jessica Campbell and Kerry Holder turn to social media to ask for help for people who have nothing but clothes on their backs.
They use Facebook and WhatsApp and call on anyone who can make a donation to accept a donation at Aintree Lodge in Petersburg.
By Wednesday, there were so many donations that they had built a huge tent on the grounds of the cottage.
"We were moved by the destruction of Knysna and thought we could try to do something to help them," Campbell said . ".
Holder said that her father, who works at a trucking company called Primelogistix, generously donated a truck to ship the donation to Knysna.
"On Thursday night we posted our request on Facebook and WhatsApp asking our friends and family to donate something.
"We never thought it would be that big," Holder said . ".
The donations, the two said, came mainly from the "Ambers" of the peterliezburg, new Hannover, Fort Worth, haowick and Hilton communities ".
Campbell said they had more than 1 000 boxes of food, clothes, blankets, animal food, baby products, toiletries and water to be delivered to a distribution center in Knysna.
"We would like to thank Aintree Lodge for allowing us to take their property as a drop --
Outside the Box, Aintree staff who help organize and pack boxes, all happy assistants and volunteers who help us, and all individuals, organizations, Campbell said: "Schools and local farmers as well as donated businesses. ".
Holder said they managed to get so many people on board via social media.
"Most people think there is fake or negative news on social media, but we are able to use it to help those who are in urgent need of help.
It is totally overwhelming to see a positive response from our community, and we highly appreciate these contributions, "Holder said.
The project did a lot of work, but it was also interesting, the two said.
"If we don't, we'll meet a lot of amazing people we 've never seen before.
"It shows us how completely unfamiliar people get together to help those in need," Campbell said . ".
Michelle Stahlhut, head of marketing at Merchiston prep school, said Campbell and Holder asked her questions about getting the school to help donate.
"We have been there many times.
Fill our bakkies with donations from our Merchiston Community, which includes students, staff, retirees and companies that some parents work.
"It's great to see the small communities in our school come together and donate so much," said Stahlhut . ".
Shirley Cochrane of Highfield also donated cookers at the cottage yesterday and applauded all those involved in collecting donations.
"Wow, just as one begins to lose faith in humanity, the outpouring of love and charity that I have never seen brings huge tears to my eyes.
"How beautiful human beings are.
Although most people now feel the pinch, they are still able to donate something.
What a beautiful city we live in.
Everyone did a good job, "Cochrane said.
Donations were loaded onto a large truck and shipped to Knysna on Wednesday.
