ionic purifiers\' dirty secret - best air purifier for smoke
Products: dust, cigarette smoke, pollen and pet dandruff: there are so many irritating substances floating around our homes and workplaces, and clean air is a hot item.
Americans spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year on stove filters and air purifiers.
While some consumers just want to bring a little extra freshness to their lives, many others hope their investment will help ease their asthma or allergies.
If you ever bought an air purifier-
Or, if you 've ever had a leisurely look at the SkyMall Directory ---
There's no doubt that you 've seen ads for ion air purifiers that take an unusual approach to clean air.
Instead of relying on the fan to move the air through the filter, these machines release a steady stream of negatively charged ions that power up dust, dandruff, or other garbage.
Particles in the air absorb negative electricity and are strongly attracted by positive-charged collection boards inside the machine. (
In many cases, they are also attracted to other charged surfaces such as walls, desktops, and TV screens. )
In addition to some models that use fans to help breathe in charged particles, most ion air purifiers work silently.
And, as the ads quickly point out, these devices generally do not have any motors or moving parts and there are no filters to replace.
There is another difference between ion air purifiers and other technologies: to varying degrees, all Ion air purifiers release ozone, a potential pollutant.
A 2006 study conducted by researchers at the University of California, Davis, found that a popular brand Ionic Breeze Quadra released about 2.
2 mg of ozone per hour, equivalent to a running copier. (
Ion purifiers should not be confused with ozone generators sold as "air purifiers.
"According to the design, these devices can release between 50 and 200 mg of ozone per hour. )
Ion purifiers are sold in pharmacies, department stores and the Internet. The well-

No fan, no motor, no noise.
"The Paradise Fresh website says its purifier can relieve asthma, bronchitis, pollen fever and other respiratory diseases . ".
"Heaven Fresh also claims that the ozone emitted by its machine helps clean the air.
According to the site, "Ozone is one of the purest and most powerful antioxidants and fungicides known.
"The bottom line is: Ion air purifiers have undeniable appeal, but there is a problem: they don't really improve air quality," said Dr.

"It is generally not recommended," he said . "
"This is the windmill I have been tilting for years.
"According to Sublett, these devices do not effectively remove dust, dandruff and other irritating substances from the room.
Without fans, he explained, they could not collect particles in the air from a few feet away.
When a small amount of dust enters the device, the plate inside quickly loses most of the power to attract more particles.
At the same time, charged particles stuck to walls or TV screens have not left the room yet and will always roll again to create trouble.
The ozone released by the equipment is another transaction.
Break down the shortcomings, Sublett said.
"Ozone is a pollutant and irritating substance.
Even a small amount is too much.
He said: "People who use several units at a time are particularly prone to ozone overload.
One patient at Sublett noticed that when she turned off her six ion purifiers at home, her breathing improved a lot.
Starting in 2009, the California Air Resources Commission recently banned all equipment that produced more than 50 ozone concentrations per billion.

Civil Assistant Professor Jeffery Siegel said it would fall below the threshold, construction and environmental engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, who studied the equipment in the lab and in his own bedroom.
Still, the new standards are misleading because even products that release a small amount of ozone can easily reach this concentration in poorly ventilated small spaces, he said.
People with asthma or allergies should consider installing high, Sublett said
