Let's start. Washington, D.
C: I have lost my job in the past three years.
I stayed at home all the time during that time.
On my resume, I listed my last job position and date.
When the recruiter asked me about the past three years, I told them that I have been staying at home to raise my children.
They will reply "Oh! I see. . .
"How or where can I add it to my resume.
To make it flashy, have I added any family tasks? Thanks, Lily.
Lily Garcia: I suggest you explain the employment gap in your cover letter instead of your resume.
I think the idea of listing your housewife duties as a job is novel ---
Of course, it's not like you 've been eating bon-
Candy in front of the TV-
But I don't think that's the message of what you 've done in the last three years. Chevy Chase, Maryland
: Hi Lily, I have a bachelor's degree in Russian in linguistics/translation (English, Spanish, Russian.
It's hard to get a job, can you tell me something?
When you are looking for a job, I think you should look for opportunities for free translation.
Publish your availability online and look for opportunities on the work Board and on the regional translation service.
In addition to that, it seems to me that you can compete for most junior positions in the administration.
Exactly where you are and how you guide your efforts should be driven by your interests.
Once you get into an organization and they see the quality of your work, you can get into a more desirable role. Fairfax, Va.
Hi Lily, I'm in trouble and don't know what to do.
I recently refuted my comments --
I don't agree with many, (unfortunately) I think a lot of the conflict stems from the interpersonal issues between me and my boss.
Since then, my supervisor has not said a word, very uncomfortable.
I think there are two options for resigning or getting fired.
I have never had this before, I have been unhappy for a long time, but when I came home, I was completely indifferent and had no motivation.
What is the best course of action in this case?
What are the future employment prospects?
Lily Garcia: The third option is to try and talk to your boss about rebuttal to reconcile some of your differences.
If that doesn't work, then you may legitimately choose to start looking for other jobs.
At the same time, make the most of your relationship with your boss as much as you can.
This is the case with the job market, and you may need longer than you would like to find a better person. New York, N. Y.
: Hi Lily, I am generally satisfied with my work as a training manager in a large, multi-company
National Corporation (Company ).
My team and I work in company "B" and in-
Site contractor for ".
There have been layoffs and multiple restructuring in "A" and there have been many changes and costs recently
Cuts from our company
My boss is under a lot of pressure and may resign or be fired.
I am worried about all these changes and would like to know what is going on in both companies, but I have never had a special understanding of office politics or office gossip, and I do not know how to get myself informed.
My boss (at "B") did vent and tell me what was going on and I really appreciate it, but he works on several different sites and I don't see him very often.
I like my job and I don't want to find another job if there is no reason.
I also want to be able to give my team a head --
If they need another job
Is there anything I can do to get to know the two companies better? Thank you.
Lily Garcia: you should ask your boss at Company A what he/she thinks is going on.
He/she may not know, but he/she knows more than you do, which is a great opportunity.
Look for other opportunities to collect more data points.
When a company goes through a period of turmoil, the executive team usually organizes meetings where employees can ask questions.
If you do not have such an opportunity, you can try to establish contact with other members of management.
I remind you to be prepared for setbacks when seeking direct answers about the future of the two companies.
In the end, you may be forced to largely decide whether to stay or go based on informal conversation and intuition. Washington, D. C. : Hi Lily --
Since I don't want to enter this at work, submit it in advance.
I am a federal employee and consider applying for another federal job at a completely different agency.
I have heard that in a similar case, an acting supervisor called another acting supervisor to ask about the applicant.
I don't want my current supervisor to know that I am applying.
What can I do or say in the app to prevent this?
Lily Garcia: you can politely ask the hiring manager not to contact your manager for the time being.
Most hiring managers will understand your wishes and avoid this embarrassment if your supervisor knows you are looking for it.
However, unless your new supervisor has a conversation with your current supervisor at some point in the future, it is unlikely that you will get a firm offer. Woodbridge, Va.
: It has been difficult for me to get a job in the last seven months, and it is very experienced.
I need a job soon.
What is the safest way to find a job quickly, in addition to the temporary agency.
Lily Garcia: try working with recruiters to get candidates into your field of experience.
Also, make sure your CV is posted with all the major job search engines and you have adjusted your settings so that recruiters can search for your information.

Sponsorship of work permit or work on H1B visa.

Thank you for your suggestion.
Lily Garcia: I can't tell you the exact name of the company, but I can tell you
Sponsorship in the technical field is common.
Most employers will not hesitate to sponsor a candidate with a combination of skills and experience.

: Hi Lily: today I applied for a copy from this website called "data entry-Home Typist.
They only provide a postal box in Santa Rosa, California.
I don't have the URL and phone number.
They don't want me to sign the contract.
They told me that I have got the job, but I need to pay $18 to process my application and pay for the training materials.
They did provide an email address.
Can you tell me this is a scam?
Thank you very much for coming to see this.
Lily Garcia: I can't tell you if this is a scam, but I can tell you that it sounds very suspicious.
You may want to consider submitting a tip to the Federal Trade Commission's consumer protection agency.
Anonymous: In an interview, or as a prerequisite for hiring someone, is it inappropriate/illegal to ask the applicant wearing a nasal ring if there is a problem with not wearing a nasal ring in the office?
Lily Garcia: if the employer is basically asking if you are willing to comply with their policies regarding dress and personal grooming, then it is not inappropriate or illegal to ask.
However, employers who raise such a question will get good advice to make sure they apply theirnose-
Communicate the policy fairly and consistently to all employees and applicants.
Again, if you wear a nose ring for religious reasons, you should be free to say so and ask that your faith be satisfied.

: I got a bachelor's degree in mathematics from RPI in Troy, NY. Y.
And a master's degree in operational studies at Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
I graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1975.
I came to Washington, D. C. C.
Working at Booze Allen and Mitre Corporation until 1985.
Then I moved into the real estate industry.
I have been able to make a living but now I feel like I need to go back to work.
How do I know what I am qualified to do and where to start?
I'm not even sure which area I want to work in.
I'm confused.
Lily Garcia: you should start there if you don't know what you want to do.
Determine your ideal job.
Then connect with the people in these positions to find out what they think about the job prospects of the people who have your skills and experience.
In my opinion, people with 23 years of real estate experience will do a good job in a sales environment.
Again, it may be precisely because you want to quit the sale that you leave the property.

: How to work at the White House?
Lily Garcia: Let me contact the president first.
But our readers may have better ideas.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find a job among White House staff?
Si fei, Md.
: I have a lot of experience in niche but I am currently out of work.
I have submitted my resume to several recruiters.
Three times now, the recruiter will call or email me to say they found the perfect candidate, then cancel our scheduled conference call and ignore my email for the next two weeks.
What's going on?
Does that mean they have filled the position?
Should I try to talk to the hiring supervisor?
It's very frustrating to feel like you're stuck in a black hole.
Lily Garcia: I don't think it would hurt to escalate your inquiry to the hiring supervisor.
Recruiters may suddenly become busy or have found someone more suitable for the position, but this is not an excuse to ignore you. Sterling, Va.
: Hello Lily, I'm thinking about changing jobs but I can't decide where to start.
I have been in the mortgage industry for more than 7 years, but it is difficult to survive due to the current changes.
Do you have any suggestions for people who are considering changing jobs? Thanks.
Lily Garcia: you can make a smooth transition from considering the relevant work.
I know the financial industry has been hit in general, but there are certainly other positions in this area that perform better than yours.
Also, what career development did your colleagues in the mortgage industry do?
They will be an important source of information and ideas.
Cost of training materials?
No, there's no work there.
They ask you to pay for some of the brochures they have compiled, explaining how you can find a job as a typist at home.
It would be a bunch of general advice, no real work, no real work leads.
Lily Garcia: Thank you for your opinion.
Silver Spring: the work of the family typists is a scam. DO NOT BOTHER.
Voice of Experience
Lily Garcia: Thank you.
I think the consensus is to go away.
Hi Lily-Maryland
I work in a company affected by the housing market and the economy.
We are currently re-doing our budget for next year and it looks like we will cut jobs.
I recently had to identify three people who were fired from our goalkeeper.
My problem is that I feel like I was selected as well.
No layoffs will be made until next week.
Although I wish I was just paranoid, I would really like to ask my boss if this is true?
Do you think this is a mistake?
Lily Garcia: I think it's wrong not to ask.
Good luck to you.
For typists: don't do this!
Training materials should never cost money.
A good, legal company will tell you in advance who is hiring you and you can contact someone by phone.
Lily Garcia: Thank you for adding voice to others.
Anonymous: Hi Lily, I value your suggestion and live for your chat and column.
I was wondering what do you think about dating someone you work?
Thank you in advance.
If this person is your boss or subordinate, it is not appropriate to date them. limits.
If this person is a colleague and your organization has no policy against the Brotherhood, you can date this person.
However, you should be cautious.
Realize that you take the risk that a relationship may fail, which may affect your other workplace relationships in a controversial way.
When you spend so much of your life at work, it's hard to avoid romantic relationships that will end or end in a bad way is not an inevitable conclusion.
Nevertheless, you should be cautious about the date and the relationship.

: I was sitting in a cube at work and the person opposite was a smoker.
When he came back from outside after smoking, the smell was very bad.
The smell of smoke came out of the partition.
It's not an option for me to move to another cube.
I have asthma and allergies.
Is there anything I can do to curb the bad smell? Thanks!
Lily Garcia: Have you tried keeping the air purifier at your workstation? Stafford, Va.
I have a big problem looking for a job.
I am a fresh college graduate and I am looking for a decent job.
I have a 1 year old son who needs to take care of the kids so I can't accept the position of $15 an hour.
I searched the internet for hours and seemed to be in a scam. Any advice?
Lily Garcia: this is an important question and needs more detailed answers than this space allows.
If you allow, I will answer this question in the "how to deal with" column next Thursday. Denver, Colo.
My company closed two offices last week and the American Express card was frozen.
I already have $1000 on my personal card for business travel.
I said yesterday that I will not travel until I have paid the money and worked out some measures
Pay for hotels and flights.
Am I unreasonable?
I have always heard that we may close at any time despite my busy work and I am worried that my expenses will not be reimbursed.
Lily Garcia: If you have reason to believe that you may not be paid, then I can't blame you for taking a hard line.
However, have you considered asking the company directly to pay for your trip rather than asking you to charge your card? Washington, D. C.
: I work with someone who thinks I'm not religious enough.
Specifically, he belongs to a very conservative part of religion, and I do not.
He didn't like me very much.
He's gone bad.
Speak ill of me to the boss and clients
The things I do, the things I say, the decisions I make-
Only when I hear "Well, it doesn't work as well as you said, because xxxxx happened, right?
"Then I had to take the time to prove that xxxxx didn't happen and things developed as I said.
It is worth mentioning that he is the only religious branch here and the two bosses agree with me (no one else talks about it except him;
No one thinks this is the topic discussed at work ).
Everything he denigrate me so far is something I can prove he was actually wrong and what happened when I showed these things, but I'm really tired of it.
However, "xxx hates me because he doesn't think I have enough religious beliefs" sounds stupid.
Any suggestions?
Lily Garcia: your supervisor should step in and stop the vandalism of this colleague.
He should be told in no uncertain terms that what he did was inappropriate.
I also suspect that this is in violation of your organization's policy of discrimination and harassment.
My suggestion is that you ask your supervisor for help. Washington, D. C.
: It seems that there is a power struggle with our office leaders, and I often refer to grievances about benefits (I am in charge of some benefits ).
I agree with some points, but not all, and I feel that the struggle of power affects the objectivity of providing the best approach to the company.
One leader did not agree with the other, so nothing happened.
I don't want to be on the side, but I don't want to hurt myself because I don't actively improve.
How should I deal with this?
Lily Garcia: It's not a matter of favoritism.
This is a question of what improvements (if any) you think need to be made.
In this power struggle, the most important thing is that you continue to do your job well with integrity.
Virginia: I have a year's review.
Especially in this economy, what is the most effective way to ask for a raise?
