Alison McMahon, a special speaker at the expo, talked about the challenges of prescription cannabis use and workplace.
"You can't get fired for holding a marijuana prescription," McMahon told the crowd . ".
More than a year ago, McMahon founded marijuana at work because he believed it was necessary to educate employers who used medical marijuana prescriptions to manage their employees, and those who chose to smoke it once it was legalized.
The employer's biggest concern, McMahon said, is "security-sensitive positions because marijuana is an injury --
Cause material.
"Closely related to this is one of the biggest challenges --
"We don't have a test for activity damage," she said . ".
The current drug test tests when a person recently smoked marijuana.
They were not able to determine if a person was damaged during the test.
"Employers may have a good employee who wants to be able to smoke marijuana in their own time, but they will not pass the drug test," McMahon said . ".
"If drug testing is part of the company's culture, it is not a good option either for employers to either have to fire a good employee or risk sending them to a zero-tolerance site.
McMahon said workers who use medical marijuana should know in advance that it is their responsibility to disclose to employers that they rely on marijuana prescriptions.
"Be patient and persevere," McMahon said . ".
"Your employer has not yet been educated in this area and you may face some challenges, but it is indeed the responsibility of the employer to receive a medical prescription.
