An investigator said the fire that destroyed the island Bay car workshop yesterday was likely caused by an electrical failure.
Firefighters were called to put out fire at the R & S car service center, proctoona Road, near Haru Falls, about 1 person. 40am on Monday.
When the first firefighters arrived from Paiya, the sunroof of the three firefighters was burning --
The Bay iron and steel building and roller doors all glow red.
Michael Finn, a senior station officer at the Piya fire brigade, said firefighters focused on saving another workshop and garage in the neighboring shed.
Each of the two firefighters in Paiya, Creek and Kawakawa sent an oil tanker.
Finn said that since there is no mesh water supply in the area, the water is pumped from the water tank of a nearby house and shuttling through the fire hydrant of the Haruru Falls.
Yesterday morning, the building still stands, but the rolling doors have collapsed and the charred remains of four cars can be seen inside.
Police stayed overnight until a fire investigator arrived around 9: 00. 30am.
It is understood that the owner of the car service center went out at the wedding on weekends.
They were told about the fire and were on their way home yesterday.
Fire safety officer Craig Bain said the fire was likely due to electrical failure and could be a failure of a computer or battery charger.
"The brigade that participated did a great job of stopping the fire from spreading to other buildings," he said . ".
Volunteer firefighters saved the neighboring cottage and even the Conservatory next to the workshop that was razed to the ground was intact.
If the appliance had to be turned on, he suggested keeping them free of dust and away from flammable things like paper.
In this case, access to water is not a problem, but he urges anyone living in areas where there is no town supply to ensure that firefighters can easily access tanks or open water.
The neighbors on Puketona road issued an alarm.
Business owners were not contacted yesterday.
