A former Scottish health minister has called for an investigation into the death of two patients after they were infected with a stool-related afungal infection in hospital.

The death of Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow has been investigated.
The Health Commission said it was still investigating the cause of death of a patient, but said earlier that the second elderly affected had died of unrelated incidents.
Alex Neil MSP called for an independent investigation because the infection was discovered in December and the filter was introduced in January 10 to deal with the problem.
He told BBC Scotland: "I think the experts have to conduct an external investigation to find out why this happened, followed by how the health commission handled it, and third, what precautions need to be taken in the future.
"The health commission sent a confusing message, so they need to clarify the situation and do so as a matter of urgency.
"The infection is caused by the inhalation of fungal cryptobacteria found mainly in soil and pigeon feces.

The health committee said that a small number of children and adult patients who are vulnerable to infection are being treated with medication, which makes a big difference.

The company says the repair work is in progress and the repair team is working to resolve the problem as soon as possible with minimal disruption.
The health committee added that as a further precaution, a specific group of patients is being transferred to the hospital due to clinical diagnosis and ongoing treatment.
The spokesman said: "The Cause investigation of the two isolated cases of cryptotoxin in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital is still in progress. " This organism is harmless to the vast majority of people and rarely causes human diseases.
