Ultra-thin temporary electronic tattoos can now turn body flaws into touch
Sensitive buttons that allow you to control your smartphone with your own wrinkles, freckles and other skin features.
People intuitively know the location of their lump and birthmark, which makes them the ideal location for touch
Martin Weigel of the University of salbrürken Saran in Germany said he was in charge of the study.
You can squeeze the freckle to answer the phone, or change the volume of the music by sliding your finger over the knuckles.
Weigel of Saran University and Google and his colleagues used conductive ink to print wires and electrodes on temporary tattoo paper.
Tattoos, which they call skin markers, are thinner than the width of human hair.
They transfer water to the skin for several days before friction.
"We take advantage of the elastic properties of the skin, including bending and stretching," said Jürgen Steimle, also a team member at Saran University.
By having tattoos react to changes in the surface of the skin, they contain multiple commands in one location.
For example, you can adjust the volume of your smartphone by sliding one finger over a tattoo placed on the side of the other finger.
But with the fingers that bend the tattoo, the volume slider may turn into a play and pause button.
Similarly, a tattoo on the knuckles can act as four different buttons when the hand holds the fist, but when the finger reaches out, the tattoo can act as a long slider.
Another touch-
Sensitive tattoos are glowing and glow when the current passes through it.
Weigel says you can get a tattoo on the icon shape that represents your favorite smartphone app, and when you get a notification, the tattoo will light up.
The team also put a heart --
The shape tattoo on the volunteer birthmark, which glows when the designated loved one can call.
Touch the tattoo and call the man.
The team will present the work on the computer
Human Interaction conference in Denver, Colorado, USA.
To test the tattoo, the group connects the tattoo to the computer, but in the future they will connect the tattoo to the Android smartphone.
"Now that we have tested the technical feasibility, the next step is to implement it in a practical way," Weigel said . ".
One practical obstacle is to narrow down the micro-controller used to transmit tattoo signals to a computer or smartphone.
In this study, Weigel's team used a copper band to connect a tattoo to a small Arduino micro-controller with a wristband, but the bulky circuit board would be uncomfortable to wear and tear at other parts of the body.
"This is an amazing study," says Chris Harrison of Carnegie Mellon University . ".
People have tried electronic tattoos before, he said, but by building this device on cheap temporary tattoos, Weigel's team has developed it that can be used by artists, programmers and amateurs
Harrison said that despite the current restrictions
Skin equipment is the next step in wearable technology.
"Human fingers are very flexible on their own skin," he said . ".
Compared to the current smartwatch screen, the hand provides a larger surface area.
It will take us 10 years to see the touch.
Harrison says sensitive tattoos used in the mainstream, but he predicts future skin
The new normal is based on control.
"You'll have these digital tattoo shops where you can go in 2050 and in 5 minutes you can go out with the iPhone 22 on your forearm.
