could the solution to pollution be hedges? shrubs are \'far more effective\' at removing toxic fumes than tall trees, experts claim - ozone air cleaner
A study shows that planting low hedges next to busy urban roads to capture harmful smoke emitted by drivers can control pollution levels more effectively than trees.
The researchers said that the green plants close to the sidewalk are more effective in reducing the impact of vehicle pollution than the larger trees.
The researchers hope their findings will help with future urban planning.
The study, published in the journal Atmospheric Environment, claimed that trees would have a negative impact on air quality in the "street canyon" environment, where buildings are located on both sides of the road.
The researchers say trees can even make pollution more concentrated based on factors such as prevailing winds.
It is said that higher leaves can reduce levels more effectively only under open road conditions, where thick, dense and tall vegetation barriers limit vehicle emissions from fresh emissions, because these vehicles will be on either side of high-concentration roads where people walk, ride bicycles or live nearby.
The study, led by the University of Surrey, is part of a project to improve the intelligent control of air pollution in Europe, saying that future urban planning should include a variety of green infrastructure, to help protect people and buildings from pollution.
Street trees, hedges, green walls and roofs act as porous bodies to make the air cleaner by removing contaminants in the air, affecting local diffusion of pollution.
This can not only create healthier air for urban residents, but also help reduce the impact of pollution on heritage buildings and other buildings built with limestone, sandstone and carbon steel.
Professor prazanne Kumar, president of air quality and health at the University of Surrey, said: "We all know that air pollution is a major factor in everyday city life.
This comprehensive review highlights the importance of using trees and hedges and other green infrastructure strategically to help create healthier environments and less polluted cities, it is also more enjoyable for everyone to live and work.
He added that the team is conducting field studies to examine the effectiveness of different types of green barriers to reduce pollution next to busy roads to help guide future urban planning decisions.
